Study Tour, August 31, 2006, "Rider-Ericsson Engine Co.", Walden, New York

The old photograph

The Earth Map

The explorers, Inez and Leif Brisfjord had only an old photograph, no address, even the local library had no information on its location. A photo showed the building beside railroad tracks. With a Google Earth Map, Inez driving, and Leif’s engineering and orienteering skills they found the building. The office manager summoned the owner, Hy Hilzen, from his home. He proved to have a keen sense of history. He has a collection of papers, documents and the desk at which John Ericsson worked. Hy Hilzens’ company produces lighting systems. He said that his father once worked with Thomas Alva Edison.

The Brisfjords’ are accustomed to the trial and error of exploration. Finding the site was well worth the effort. If members and friends of the John Ericsson Society would like to visit the former Rider-Ericsson Engine Company, the Brisfjords’ would be pleased to arrange a study tour.
